Perception depends on history. So it helps to fill in the history.

In the second half, there is a list of Ghibelline cities, a number of which have yet to make it onto the map.

I tried searching 'fortifications' and 'Assisi' and also with 'Forli' and got pictures of swallowtail merlons, but not certain of authenticity or dating.

Swallowtail merlons have their Ghibelline origins, but by the time of the 1400s, there have already been several intervening layers of historical events, somewhat tied to the past - of course. Meanwhile, sort of on the side, Venice, as an independent state,  adopts the use of the swallowtail merlon and passes that construction down the Adriatic and apparently on to Rhodes.

Not only would a traveler to Rome, coming from the north or west surely see the swallowtail merlons of Northern Italy, there would also be the probability that travelers sailing from the east, through Rhodes to Venice, would find these merlons as well.

I am no longer sure. Isn't Fappoli and Fapoli the same thing?
One thing is for sure, there is not a 1000m without these battlements in this area.
It is rather an art to find none of this kind.
And somehow they all look the same with or without these pinnacles.

Confusing indeed. I added two of them. Your first link is one castle (Champorcher) but the two other links are one building (Foppoli).

Hi Koen,
it might be useful to put a link to the map in the other thread in the opening post here, otherwise the map will be hard to find in the long run.

Yeah you're right. I've also asked David to move up the "Voynich essentials" subforum and rename it to something like "curated threads", since a lot of it is the crystallization of our community efforts. But he is either too busy or ignoring me :p
