Upcoming Voynich program at the Getty - LisaFaginDavis - 19-05-2025

Hi, everyone,

Sorry for my radio silence - my day job has kept me very busy (it isn't easy working in the humanities in the United States at the moment). I'm also working on three different interdisciplinary Voynich collaborations, implementing various methodologies to try and determine the original sequence of bifolia within the different sections of the manuscript.

I wanted to let you all know that I will be participating in an online program about the VMS sponsored by the Getty Museum in Los Angeles and hosted by curator Elizabeth Morrison, taking place on June 13 at 3 PM Eastern. I hope you will join us! Click here for more information and to register:

Lisa, do you know if the session will be recorded and available for others to watch afterwards?

RE: Upcoming Voynich program at the Getty - LisaFaginDavis - 11-06-2025

Yes, the session will be recorded and made available on the Getty Center website. More than 1,300 have registered!

I managed to make it live and it was super interesting. I was watching the chat and you could see how much everybody's interest was piqued. And only a few kooks made an appearance Wink

I won't steal Lisa's thunder but there was a VERY interesting piece of news about a collaborative project she's working on and an upcoming paper that we will all find interesting.

I also spotted The Koen doing a great job fielding questions.

Just finished watching the webinar with Dr Lisa Fagin Davis. My understanding of her position on the Voynich manuscript is as follows:
  • it is an authentic medieval document (not a modern hoax or fake)
  • it shows evidence of continuous use and reference, by a person or persons who presumably understood the content
  • it is written on vellum from the early 1400s
  • the illustrations are firmly within the tradition of Western European medieval manuscripts (not, for example, Middle Eastern, not Oriental, not Meso-American)
  • the text has the structure and the statistical properties of a natural human language with an alphabet
  • the underlying language is unknown
  • there were five scribes
  • all claims of a "solution" (in the sense of identifying the meaning of the text) are unfounded.
