That's a good remark - although if the hypothetical heretics were confident about their encoding of the text, maybe they felt just as confident about their encoding of the imagery?
IMO the VMs cosmos is a clear example of obfuscation. The same three parts as the Oresme illustration, the same structure, the same 43 undulations; they are the same "things', but given a totally different appearance in the VMs - as much as possible, while still retaining objective identity. Plus the use of two images combined, to make the full explanation that much harder to recover.
There can be no question that the orientation of the blue-striped patterns of VMs White Aries can be interpreted according to two different reference systems: either radially, within the drawing or in isolation as they are on the page. There is little doubt about the irrelevance of the first situation. There is great historical significance in the second option, but only when relevant tradition is known. This is intentional obfuscation in the illustration.
