There already has been a thread on mermaids. This is not about mermaids, sirens or werewolves, so much as this is about ancestry.
Ancestry as it was viewed by one the most powerful families in central Europe at a time that coincides with the VMs parchment Carbon-14 dates.
The family maintained the story of ancestral descent from a mythical creature. Did they, did anyone, maintain descent from a mermaid? - No.
From a werewolf? Not seriously, I hope.
The first generation of Valois descendants of the French monarchy claimed ancestral descent from Melusine through the royal Luxembourg line of their mother. The significance is shown in the evidence of the Duke of Berry and maintained by the third Duke of Burgundy.
The pond illustration of VMs f79v should also be compared with the image of Harley 334 f 57, made in Paris. The Harley manuscript is also part of the VMs cosmic comparison.
Now the question can be asked as to the identity of this figure. Who or what has been represented here - in either illustration? Is it the mythical ancestress of the ruling royal dynasty? Or is it it the "I don't know" alternative? Is that really a viable alternative interpretation for the people who were contemporary with the actual, historical situation?
The question is not whether the Melusine identification is valid. The matter is more to evaluate the implications of a direct connection between Melusine and the Valois ancestry. I would argue that within the contemporary milieu, the semiotic environment, of the 1400s, the traditional interpretation is widely prevalent as seen from the 'Valois' perspective. The 'Valois' perspective covers a specific period of time and a certain geographic area. It is a general reference, with good provenance, but lacks specificity.
