I just ran across this old page: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view., written in 2009, which has a whole page of his thoughts on the VMs. Under the section on word structure midway down the page, James writes:

This might then leave i to represent (quite naturally) a level of singletons. It is important to note that i and e are the only glyphs to appear (overwhelmingly) in neither initial nor final position.
