I have a reasonable working knowledge of modern pigments, but modern pigments are almost always pre-mixed and I've only done a small amount of creation-from-scratch. I've worked with natural dyes made from vegetable matters, but I have never studied medieval pigments. I've read a few (only a few) articles about them, so I suppose I'm not completely in the dark, but I really have only a cursory understanding of how they made and used pigments in the Middle Ages. I appreciate you sharing this detailed information. It's very interesting.

About translucent wash style, indeed this seems to be what the VM painter was hoping to emulate. But it failed miserably because in so many places the paint obscures the line work.
