Why the notion of instability? Doesn't that go against the "universe as clockwork" notion usually seen in these diagrams?
That's what coming to my mind when I'm looking at the figure. As to the reason, I have no ideas.

The cloth is a good example. The flying carpet is usually depicted in that way. It's both stable (does not fall) and unstable (swung by air).
