I think that's because one of them will go to heaven so he is content. Jesus has a similar expression. But the one on the left looks worried because he didn't repent and now he's going to hell.

This is a wonderful parallel to support arca libraria's suggestion that the two root faces may be the thieves.
I want to remind you that a similar object (crutch, “big nail”) is in the hands of a nymph on You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. (although this is q13a)   You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

Here is a possible meaning of the 'log' in the Voynich. Pessaries were used in the 15th century as a cure for a prolapsed uterus. There are some great pictures on this website from the Detch translation of the Trotula along with pictures of the fumigations pots which look very similar to the plant root pages. You are not allowed to view links. @Monica, do you have the article or did you read the (paid Springer) article? I'm very interested in any medieval knowledge and usage on that particular subject. If so, please do send me a PM so I can send you my email address.

I just want to point out that Marco's Sphere treasure seems to support this:

That's interesting, but the upright position of the nymph does not support that. She could cling to the mast (as in the pic above), but then the mast ought to stand upright. Let's say this is a floating piece of timber, and the person clings to it to hold on water. But then those sticks out of the timber - they mean this is some special man-made object, not just generic timber.
I can't remember if I posted this on another thread or on my blog, but I was also thinking log man's contraption was similar to some of the mechanisms they created to ford rivers with rough waters.
I think both Koen/Marco's shipwreck debris and JKP's mention of rough river water are apropos to what i think is being said in f79r. To me tubes are rivers, so the thing he has is a river within a larger waterbody. This to me says flood. What used to be river is now gulf. This is evidently the case with the Persian Gulf, some think Atlantis or Eden are to be found under its waters. This representation of a far past event is in keeping with the next page featuring the ground scars from water which once flowed into the Red Sea. It is also consistent with the idea of showing a great year in the zodiac section, we are talking about an old earth.
