I suggest that you either add the name of A. Schinner or remove my name from the name of the new thread.
It's considered courteous to quote the names in the same order that they appear on the original paper.

On a general note...
In the case of student papers, it is particularly important to respect the order. It's difficult for students to get published, so they sometimes ask a professor if he/she will "sponsor" the student to help get a paper published. Sometimes the student does 100% of the work and the professor's name is really only there to help the student get a foot in the door. So it takes a lot away from the student who did the research if people switch the order of the names around and give the major credit to the professor (who sometimes contributes nothing other than the name).
I noticed when the press reported on the research of Hauer and Kondrak, most of them switched the names around (probably because Kondrak was the older researcher), but it's considered impolite to do so. A lot of discussion goes on when deciding the order of names on research papers and it's best to respect that order. I don't know how much Kondrak contributed (maybe a little, maybe a lot), but I have seen situations where the professor had no involvement in the research, the work was entirely done by the student (usually a grad student).

If you don't want to write both names it would also be possible to write "Timm et al.". For instance You are not allowed to view links.

I took the lazy option and just removed the name.

Often what I do is write both names if there are two, and first name, et al if there are more than two, but that's just a matter of personal preference.

OK, peer reviews and all that, but recently we have seen a vivid peer reviewed example, and there are much more.
I believe the peer review system as it is will anytime soon give way to post-publication community critique. The whole model of scientific publication will be changed.

Hi Torsten, yes of course I'm aware of that. My comment was in no way personal, but just a general observation on the "open access" model.

Usually up to three or even four authors are mentioned expressly, and if there are 4-5 or more then it goes in the "et alii" fashion. "Et alii" is really for those cases when the author list runs beyond the horizon. It's always better to mention the authors expressly. When it is A and B, it's unfair to have it "A et. al.", let alone it violates the grammar.
