Here I mark where the cross is. I'm not sure if it's not been just a means of filling the space with ink (the sequence of strokes). I see no solid indications of that anything was crossed out at all. And, if so, it must have been rather tiny.

Those marks are more visible in my photoshop results at the top of the thread. Can you make anything out?

It is just like you say though, like a Rorscharch test. I can make it say Peanut Gallery when i look at your version...but of course that can't be... The eva s i saw is between those words, again a little lower, like the top part is in line but the c part is below. If i look at the original file...it kinda of looks like there is an o or a or possibly 9 after it, a semicolon or i before it, and maybe a p before that but then it is not a voynichese character, and that is where the cross is so maybe just looks like a p because of that. Pisa? Pico? Maybe they tried to put a label in the bud and it didnt work out?
Looking at the facsimilie, I can see that it's just brushwork. An initial O has been made, then a thick swipe of paint across. It may be that the illustrator started colouring it in vertically, them thought better of it and continued with horizontal swipes.

I notice that there are three other Latin letters clearly visible on this plant. On the right hand side we have an ornate initial F

On the left we have a CH (or CA), which is written 90º to the page (I have rotated this image to make it more visible)

Both of these letters, of course, have been noticed before but I mention them here for completeness sake, and because I don't remember any recent discussion about them.
It's the first time I see the one in the green leaf being called CH though.
Well, could be CA with the strokes not joining up.
Guys, that's not CA nor CH, it's "g", and it's been discussed many times Wink
I agree with Anton. It's a g on that green leaf, clearly written in a common style of the time. The g often had a long looped tail that curled up like that.
Excuse me while I rotate my phone screen and squint...

Oighhh!! It's hard enough to see VMS details on a big monitor. I don't think I'd even attempt it on a phone screen!! Big Grin
