Whenever someone finds a good parallel in a manuscript known to have been copied many times, i take it as though all copies are possibly referenced, or at least those they could have seen. Those that came after may also show information, since are also copies, and may have lost versions as their exemplars, ie a way to see something that may have been lost, or another way to think about it.

Here we see some other versions of similar scenes, each with their own takes on it. The barrel becomes earth, water,  a pit, a well, a stronghold, a burial, as the case may be.

They applied to Searcher's man in a barrel example, being other representations of the same context, from Dante's Inferno, regarding Nimrod, whom we know from the bible as the first ruler after the great flood, and possibly responsible for the confusion of languages at Babel. 

The idea being, someone might have seen such an image, which shows less context than some of the others, but which might have inspired the usage of barrellike containers for the nymphs in the vms, especially if they wanted to correlate or refer to Dante's divine comedy in doing so, or to refer to Nimrod or giants, or some other connection.

In this case, a well seems to apply both to dante's context of a stronghold (some of the other drawings show wells quite clearly) and to the vms, wherein i see it as indicating civilisation, there is always a water source nearby any town, a well in the village, a river, etc. and i see the zodiac section as a great year, which if that is the case, seems to mean we are probably talking about not just civilisation, but the history of civilisation.

Depicting rulers in wells might have been used to invoke dante's work, given the similarity in this instance. That seems to me to work too, given the quire seems to be about water, and we certainly have a confusion of languages going on. maybe it is a clue to unravel it all. Or a little bit of it.

The wells might be there to invoke main points of biblical history from the stories of Nimrod (Tower of Babel, the Flood) so that seems to fit with the history of civilisation also. Note that the vms wells disappear about 6000 years back, each zodiac "month" covering an age of approximately 2000 years, so that fits too. That is why Pisces is first, it was and is the present age.  (Well, this is the dawning of the age of Aquarius...) But the nymphs continue for many "months" more, and they are drawn as though they are nomadic, as people were before the first known civilisations. This could be why everything is hidden in plain sight, only a learned person who had read the referenced texts and seen the referenced drawings would understand the mnemonic hints at further ideaology.

Quire 13 can be seen as a tour of waterways, shorelines, rivers and lakes, and can furthermore be seen as the pattern of human migration over time, out of Africa. I think this explains the nakedness of the nymphs as well, they represent people of the areas over time, not any one time. When they stay in one place for a period of time, that is when culture develops and explains the designs on the wells, and the clothing that is to be found at the beginning of the sequence, closer to the present.

It might refer to what Nimrod says... it is a jail which keeps you here. It might be a comparison to urban growth over time, a warning about dependecy on failing infrastructure, or changes in geography over time. Many ancient ports are now landlocked, and many ancient cities are now under water. This seems reflected in the Pisces middle ring with its knocked down infrastructure painted with green, perhaps meaning claimed by the sea. Silt appears to figure prominently in quire 13 as well.

So i am not saying it is so, but it might be possible. I like the idea of the vms being a history of the world type of compendium which pulls in other works through references. Another example is the Oresme connection with the Cosmos TO map, i think that acts as a reference for the complete works, which gives us other aspects of our place in the universe, and other scientific and philosophical ideas to consider.
