After reading JKP's blog, and taking a closer look at the leaves emerging from the stem You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.
I think it's probably a monocot, as opposed to Sunflower (which is a dicot). The leaves covering the stem as a sheath is a monocot characteristic if I'm not wrong.. (BTW Millet's a monocot plant, so seems to be a good suggestion)

Yeah especially some kind of millet, it seemed possible as soon as JKP posted the weirdly romantic millet harvesting scene. And you are right Common Man, the leaves in the VM drawing do appear to sheath around the stem.
