Independently on this idea about f58r, I have always thought of the weirdoes as "upper case" initials,
I have been thinking on similar lines. I think the weirdos are what we call 'Versalien' in German, capital letters and are in some way the beginning of a new section of the text, very likely they are some kind of abbreviation for something, you find this kind of Versalien in many texts cp. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versal
