Maybe that's what needs to be done with them.
I know with some of the orchids (and numerous bromeliads), the original base plant is only happy for a few years, but if you bend the stems and give them some mulch to form new "roots" (or aerial stems), they will form a new plant. Perhaps that is what a Kalanchoe wants to do.
